This coming school year will mark the 4th year that we’ve been 1:1 in all of our middle schools in the district. We’ve also added iPads at the elementary level and are looking at adding devices at the high school level.
One of the biggest challenges we ran into during years one and two was trying to deal with and manage Apple IDs. We tried using generic accounts for kids, which caused a whole host of issues. We then created accounts for all of our kids but this turned out to be a management nightmare as well. We were excited, although a bit nervous about how it would actually work, when Apple introduced the Apple ID for Students program.
Last year, we went into this program a bit blind. We tested it but between testing and the actual emails going out to parents, Apple changed the look of the email and changed the process a bit. That was out of our control. What was in our control and where we kind of missed the boat was creating a step-by-step walk-through for parents detailing the steps to create these accounts for their children under 13. This year, I’ve decided not to rely on all of our parents to figure out this process on their own.
I’ve created this step by step guide, with screenshots, to walk parent through the process to create Apple IDs for their kids. You are welcome to use this guide as you see fit or make a copy to change it, remix it. I hope you find it useful.
